Hi all, I thought I’d post an update on what’s going on behind the scenes with stuff I’ve written. I know I don’t post about my “day job” much and that’s because it’s all been a bit of a whirlwind for me. If you had asked me back in 2019 when I sold my first children’s book if I ever thought that I’d be here… well, let’s just say that God sometimes takes us places we don’t expect.
Indigenous Ingenuity, co-written with Edward Kay, received a Nerdy! Our Nerdy Book Award is for “longform nonfiction.” If you haven’t heard of the Nerdy Awards, it’s put on by a large group of big-time readers of children’s literature — bloggers, authors, teachers, librarians, parents, and readers. Every year they get together via the internet to nominate their favorite books. Thank you for the award, you bunch of fabulous nerds!
In addition to a Nerdy, Indigenous Ingenuity has been chosen as an Orbis Pictus Award Honor Book. This 2023 honor means we came in second place for the Orbis Award (which is still a really great thing!). If you haven’t caught on by now, teachers and librarians really like this book (hopefully because I poured my heart and soul into it).
In other news, I just got back from San Diego where I was pitching Indigenous Ingenuity at the Kidscreen Summit. That’s right, a TV show is in the works! I remember back in 2019, asking God to take me on an adventure, and this just might be it. I will keep you posted on how this new children’s adventure series plays out.
My first book Buffalo Wild! was just selected for the TD Summer Reading Club 2024 for the theme of “To the stars!” That sounds rather adventurous too, doesn’t it?:)
My newest book, Why We Dance has just received a Kirkus Starred Review! This gorgeous book is illustrated by the amazing Aly McKnight, and yes, you can purchase her art here. You can also purchase the book at bookstores near you or at Amazon. That’s it for now. Thanks for reading!
